Juul Is For Fools
Satire Project Reflection
This topic was important to me because everyday I notice my peers Juuling and while I really don’t care what other people do, I’m just confused as to why they do it. By starting this project I realized how bad juuling actually is for you and how it’s imbedding addiction into teenagers. This is a problem because the companies that make these products are brainwashing parents and teenagers into thinking Juuling is so much better for you than smoking. Ignorance is bliss and that’s a common theme with all controversial issues. A lot of parents who know their kids juul have convinced themselves that at least their kids aren’t smoking.
I think the way we chose to do our live skit will work. Dr. Phil is a meme now and by having teenagers relate to what’s being said then maybe they’ll realize maybe it’s not a good idea to get addicted to nicotine at 16. Dr. Phil is constantly having teens on the show and even though it’s probably all staged, they do bring up some controversial issues and make me realize even more that society is messed up. I contributed to the group project, I served as the interviewer in the video portion of the project and I’m also Dr. Phyllis in the live skit.

ReplyDeleteI thought your live skit in class was very entertaining and well thought out. I liked how you kept repeating the use of the satirical device of reversal to show how juuling was better than smoking and was a much healthier alternative. I also liked how you implemented the idea of having the teacher support the idea of juuling and by saying how it should be mandatory in the classroom and everyone should have a juul, both satirical techniques made a very effective presentation to get your point across and show how bad of a problem juuling is in our society. Your project was able to successfully point out the flaws of teenagers in our society who juul although there are very obvious consequences and hopefully push for those who do juul to encourage them to quit the habit altogether.
I really like your group's video and live skit in class, it's very entertaining and interesting. I liked how you use reversal throughout the presentation to show how juuling was better than smoking and was healthier. I also liked how you present a classroom full of students and teacher saying how juuling is mandatory and how it benefits you. Overall, the satirical devices used made an effective claim and show how juuling is a big and bad in the society.
ReplyDeleteYour video and live skit were very effective in conveying the message that juuling is just as harmful as smoking, especially with the inclusion of live audience participation. The way teenagers were portrayed was startlingly accurate, which further illustrated the extent to which society is ignorant of the harmful effects of juuling. The use of incongruity in having teachers and a doctor advocate for juuls being used in classrooms and by teenagers was a unique way in addressing the absurdity of juuls being seen as a healthy alternative to smoking. Altogether, both components of the skit were clever in getting the intended message across.
